9 Common SaaS SEO Mistakes to Avoid to Scale Up Your Business 2024

Written byLana Updated onMarch 14, 2024

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is important for Software as a Service (SaaS) companies. Nowadays, when people want to find something online, they usually start with search engines like Google.

Google processes over 8.5 billion searches per day; it’s clear that being good at SEO is crucial for getting noticed online.

Many SaaS companies overlook common SaaS SEO mistakes, which can seriously impact their presence in search engine results.

As an SEO consultant for several SaaS companies, I’ve seen firsthand how even minor errors in SEO efforts can hold back a SaaS company’s growth. With more than a year of experience in this field, I’m here to walk you through this guide.

This guide will explore why SEO is important for SaaS businesses, understand what SaaS SEO is, look at common SEO mistakes many companies overlook, and learn the best practices to avoid these downsides.

I aim to help ensure your company’s growth isn’t affected by these common, avoidable SEO mistakes.

Why SEO is Important for SaaS Businesses?

SEO is important for SaaS (Software as a Service) businesses, and here’s why:

  • It’s great for generating leads. By using SEO effectively, you can attract more people who are interested in your offer.
  • SEO boosts the number of visitors to your website without paying for ads. This is known as organic traffic.
  • It leads to more people taking the action you want on your site, like signing up or buying something.
  • Good SEO can lead to more sales and money for your business.
  • It’s a powerful tool for making more people aware of your brand.
  • With solid SEO, you can cut down on how much you spend on paid marketing.
  • It helps your website to rank higher than your competitors in search results.

SaaS SEO strategy is CRUCIAL for your business. You cannot stand out if you do not understand search intent and keyword research.

In my experience working with most SaaS companies, I’ve noticed several SEO mistakes that are often overlooked.

Here, I’ll discuss these common errors to help you avoid them. It’s crucial to be aware of these downsides to ensure the success of your SEO strategy.

Mistake # 1: Improper Content Formatting and Design

Imagine trying to read a blog, but the text is so small it hurts your eyes. This isn’t entertaining for anyone, making people leave your site quickly. It isn’t good for your SEO efforts.

Ensuring your content looks good and is easy to read is important in SaaS SEO, but it’s often not given enough attention.

When your content is just a big wall of text or your pictures are too small or not interesting, people won’t want to read it.

A big mistake is using a font that’s hard to read. This is where a good content strategy comes into play. You need to think about creating content that’s not just informative but also relevant content that’s presented in a way that’s easy and enjoyable to read.

When it comes to the design of your single blog post pages, it’s essential to prioritize readability. I highly recommend to only use black text on a white background.

This classic combination offers optimal contrast, ensuring that your content is easily legible and accessible to all readers.

On the other hand, using a different color background, as illustrated below, can potentially hinder visibility and detract from the overall user experience.

What Can You Do?

Fixing these formatting issues is important to boost your SEO and improve your website:

  • Make your paragraphs short and easy to read: Don’t mass everything into long sections. Shorter paragraphs help readers quickly get what they need.

  • Use clear titles and subtitles: I use AI tools to generate engaging and relevant headlines, making the content visually appealing and helping search engines understand the content. This strategy is great for boosting your search rankings.

  • Choose the right font size and style: Avoid small fonts that are hard to read and overly fancy styles that are confusing. The right font makes your content creation efforts worthwhile because it ensures your audience can comfortably read it.

Mistake # 2: Not Following the User’s Search Intent

When you search keywords for your website, it’s super important to think about what people actually want to find when they use those words in a search.

For example, your software might be excellent at something – but is that what people seek? Let’s say your SaaS business helps with credit checks for B2B customers.

You might find a keyword like “business checks” that seems good because many people search for it. But most people might look for regular paper checks, not what your software offers. You can double-check this with a quick Google search.

It’s important to avoid using the wrong keywords that don’t match what your potential customers are searching for.

Mistake #3: Writing for Search Engines Instead of Users

There was a time when writing just to please search engines (like by stuffing in lots of keywords) used to work for quick gains. But now, things have changed.

Google has updated its algorithm to favor content that is helpful for people. The best thing to do now is to answer users’ questions better than anyone else and ensure they have a good experience on your site.

Here’s what makes for a great user experience (UX):

  • Content should be easy to read. This means organizing it with clear headlines and sections so people can quickly find what they need.
  • Your pages should load fast.
  • Your website design needs to be mobile optimization-friendly. It should look good and work well on any device size.

Ensure everyone, including those with visual or other impairments, can use your content.

Mistake # 4: Forgetting Basic SEO Best Practices

Basic SEO steps include working on your meta tags, meta descriptions, URLs, and how you handle images. These are simple on-page SEO things that many SaaS companies forget.

SEO doesn’t have to be tough. Most of the good practices, also known as white hat SEO, include:

  • Use keywords in your content in a natural way, not overdo it.
  • Link building in a smart way.
  • Creating URLs that look professional and include helpful keywords.

  • Make sure your content is easy to read and understand.

Mistake # 5: Building The Wrong Links

Adding wrong links to your site isn’t a good SEO strategy. What matters is the quality of the links. It’s better to have links from well-known and trusted websites in your industry than lots of low-quality links from directories.

These high-quality links are more valuable, and search engines pay more attention to them.

Also, a title tag shows up in the search results as the name of your page. Not making this title tag search-engine-friendly is a common mistake.

It’s not just the label of your page in search results but also plays a big role in SEO. Remember, even internal links within your site should be thoughtfully placed and relevant to improve your site’s SEO.

Mistake # 6: Focusing Keyword Research Around High-Volume

Just because many people search for a certain keyword doesn’t mean it’ll bring in more money.

For instance, if you try to rank for “task management software,” which has a 2.5k search volume but also has 65 keyword difficulty with a lot of competition.

You might not even get to the first page of search results. It means you probably won’t see a big increase in money from people finding you through this search.

On the other hand, if you choose a less common keyword with fewer searches and less competition, you have a better chance of ranking higher.

More specific keywords, called long-tail keywords, better match exactly what people seek. Getting to the first page for a long-tail keyword can boost your income.

Focusing on these long-tail keywords is a big part of modern SEO. If you’re not paying attention to these opportunities, you might miss out on potential earnings and spend too much effort on the wrong keywords.

Mistake # 7: Non-Optimization of Technical SEO

Technical SEO is super important, much like having a website that’s easy to navigate. But here, it’s about ensuring Google’s bots can easily crawl your site and understand your content.

  • Page Speed: Use tools like Google’s PageSpeed Insights to see if your website loads quickly or slowly. Make changes as needed, like reducing image sizes or using plugins that help with speed.

  • Schema Markup: This helps search engines understand your website’s content better.
  • Mobile-Friendly Design: Even if you’re a B2B company, at least half your traffic will likely come from mobile devices, so make sure your site works well on them.

  • Broken Links: Regularly check your site for links that don’t work. You can use Google Analytics and other tools to find and fix these.

  • Redirects: Try to keep internal redirects low. Use 301 redirects for content that has permanently moved.

Mistake # 8: Not Using AI for Creating Content for a SaaS Business

In today’s world, where everything moves quickly and efficiency is crucial, not using AI tools to help with tasks is a big miss for SaaS businesses.

AI has come a long way recently, offering unique tools to make things faster, save time, and boost how well things work. When thinking about using AI for automating tasks, here are some points to keep in mind:

Content Creation

I use tools like Jasper AI and its alternatives to quickly create amazing blog posts and social media content. It’s like having a personal digital assistant always ready with fresh, creative ideas.

These AI tools are fantastic for generating content effortlessly, saving me time, and keeping the creative flow going.

Data Analysis

Think about a huge pile of data. Imagine using AI to examine it and quickly pull out the most important bits. No more spending hours on manual number work.

I use data analytics tools and software that do this job in seconds. With AI’s help, it’s like having a fast and smart assistant who handles all the complex data analysis for you.

Customer Support

AI chatbots are like helpful robots on your website, ready to assist your customers 24/7. They take care of the simple questions, which means your real team can focus on the more complicated issues.

In this way, you get the best of both worlds: quick answers for common queries and human expertise for tougher problems.

Email Marketing

It’s hard to send emails that grab people’s attention. That’s where AI comes in. I use AI email generator tools to make each email feel tailored just for the person reading it.

This way, my customers get emails that speak to them, making them feel valued and understood. Using AI for email writing makes the whole process of email marketing more effective and personal.

SEO Optimization

I use AI SEO tools to stand out on Google. These tools work like magic for SEO, helping to draw more attention to your site.

They’re great at understanding what your target audience is looking for and optimizing your site to meet those needs. With AI, getting your website noticed by the right people becomes a lot easier.

Mistake # 9: Ignoring Website Updates and Maintenance

It’s important to regularly update and take care of your website to get better at SEO. Your site needs to load quickly and be secure.

So, you should clean out old cache files and ensure images aren’t too big, as this helps your site load faster.

Also, regularly update your security features to protect your site from hackers, phishing, and other online dangers.

A website that’s well looked after not only makes visitors and clients happy but also boosts your SEO. Search engines like Google prefer top-notch websites in both security and performance.

You can use web audit tools to check your website and fix any issues regularly. This helps keep your website in the best shape for users and search engines.

What is SaaS SEO?

SEO means making your website easy to find on search engines like Google. SaaS SEO is just that, specifically for companies offering software as a service.

Imagine you have a great SaaS product. You want people to find it online, right? That’s where SaaS SEO comes in. It helps your product show up on search engines when people are looking for what you offer.

SaaS SEO is your plan to make your website more visible in search results. It involves a few key steps:

  • Keyword research: Figuring out what words your audience uses when searching online.
  • Content creation: Writing useful stuff that includes those keywords.
  • Smart Strategies: These are to get your SaaS platform noticed by the right people.
